Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico — Dozens of residents lined up at a local sports unit on Friday to receive measles vaccinations as part of a state campaign to prevent the spread of the virus amid a national outbreak.
The vaccination drive took place at the Cecilio Chi sports unit in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, with many residents expressing relief at the opportunity to get immunized. Most attendees said the vaccine provides peace of mind, noting that measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications.
Gonzalo Pech Chuc, one resident, said he was not fully aware of the measles cases reported in Quintana Roo but did not want to miss the chance to get vaccinated. “I think it’s very good to take the vaccine for disease prevention because I know it’s a serious illness. I’ve had it before, but I’m cured now,” he stated.
Pech Chuc added that he was pleased to see children participating in the vaccination effort, emphasizing that they are often the most affected by the virus. “It’s an advantage so they don’t get that disease, because I know it’s serious and can become chronic. I just got vaccinated again and I think it will help me a lot,” he said.
Another resident, Fabiola Álvarez, highlighted the importance of vaccination to stop the virus from spreading across the state. “It’s highly recommended to avoid infection in the long term. And I do see a strong response from the public. Why risk ourselves and our families letting it spread? Vaccines are good and that’s what they’re for,” she remarked.
Authorities urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to visit the sports unit in the coming days. The campaign launched on February 5 as part of broader efforts to contain the measles outbreak affecting Mexico.
