Ex-Mayor Paoly Perera’s Truck Caused Fatal Crash, Report Says

Fatal crash scene on Federal Highway 307 in Quintana Roo involving former mayor Paoly Perera

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The truck carrying former Felipe Carrillo Puerto Mayor Paoly Perera was responsible for the crash that killed her, according to preliminary findings from the State Prosecutor’s Office.

The vehicle was traveling at excessive speed on wet pavement when the driver lost control entering a curve and crossed into the oncoming lane, investigators said.

The crash occurred Monday morning on Federal Highway 307 between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the turnoff to the community of X-Hazil, near the town of Uh May.

According to preliminary accounts, the driver tried to regain control and return to the correct lane, swerving to avoid two oncoming vehicles before slamming into a third truck carrying a family traveling from Bacalar to Xcaret.

Nadia Perera, who was also in the former mayor’s truck, said the driver lost control before the impact, a version consistent with the initial accident reconstruction.

Paoly Perera died at the scene. Her driver survived but was injured and was airlifted for specialized medical care after receiving treatment at the site. The driver of the other truck and a passenger were also seriously injured.

The circumstances and any liability will be determined as the investigation continues, authorities said.
