Man Charged After Selling a Rented Car in Cancún

A man accused of renting a Volkswagen Virtus and selling it without authorization in Cancun.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man has been formally charged after allegedly renting a Volkswagen Virtus and then selling it without the owner’s permission, the State Prosecutor’s Office said.

The suspect, identified as Alan Jesús N., faces charges of fraud and abuse of confidence. According to investigators, on July 23 he agreed to rent the car from the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, for one week in exchange for 3,800 pesos.

When the rental period ended, the owner tried to contact him by phone and text messages but received no response. Using the vehicle’s GPS tracking system, the owner located the car at a home in the Supermanzana 237 neighborhood. A woman at the residence said she had bought the vehicle through a private sale.

During the investigation, agents interviewed the buyer, who said she had agreed on July 24 to purchase the car from Alan Jesús N. after he offered it for sale on Facebook. She said she paid 150,000 pesos for the vehicle after inspecting it.

Investigative police officers seized the car and executed an arrest warrant. A judge later ordered formal proceedings against him for his alleged involvement in fraud and abuse of confidence.
