Editorial Policy

Our Mission

Riviera Maya News & Events delivers timely, accurate, and relevant news coverage from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and across the Riviera Maya and Yucatán Peninsula. We serve the English-speaking community — residents, expatriates, investors, and travelers — by curating and translating the region’s most important stories from Spanish-language sources, official government communications, and local news reports.

Editorial Standards

Our editorial team applies the following standards to every story we publish:

  • Accuracy: We verify factual claims against at least one credible source — official statements, government press releases, established news organizations, or direct eyewitness accounts. Where sources conflict, we note the discrepancy.
  • Correction: Errors are corrected promptly and transparently. See our Corrections policy below.
  • Independence: Our editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers, sponsors, or commercial partners. Sponsored content is clearly labeled.
  • Fairness: We strive to represent all relevant viewpoints in stories involving controversy, legal proceedings, or public debate. When a party declines comment, we note this.

Content Types

Our content falls into these categories:

  • Curated News: Stories translated or adapted from Spanish-language news sources, government bulletins, and official press releases. Original source is credited in the article.
  • Original Reporting: Articles produced directly by our editorial team through interviews, on-the-ground observation, or analysis of primary sources.
  • Community & Events: Announcements, cultural event previews, and lifestyle coverage sourced from municipal calendars, event organizers, and community submissions.
  • Sponsored Content: Paid or promotional content is clearly labeled “Sponsored” or “Advertisement” at the top of the article and is visually distinct from editorial content.

Corrections Policy

We are committed to correcting errors promptly and transparently.

  • How to report an error: Email corrections@rivieramayanews.mx or use our contact form with the subject line “Correction Request” and include the article URL and the specific error.
  • Correction process: When an error is confirmed, we correct the article text and add an editor’s note at the bottom stating what was changed and when.
  • Significant errors: For factual errors that materially change the meaning of a story, we publish a separate Correction Notice visible on the affected article.
  • Retractions: If a story is found to be substantially inaccurate or based on unreliable sourcing, it may be retracted entirely. Retracted articles remain accessible with a clear notice explaining the retraction reason.

Sourcing and Translation

Where indicated, stories are translated and adapted from Spanish-language sources including but not limited to:

  • Government press releases (state and federal)
  • Official social media accounts of government agencies
  • Established Mexican news outlets
  • Law enforcement and judicial communications
  • Municipal announcements and public records

Translation aims to preserve the original meaning and context. Where cultural or legal concepts do not have direct English equivalents, explanatory notes are provided.

Byline Policy

Articles are attributed to the editorial team member who produced the final English version. Our named contributors include:

  • Laura Castillo — covers tourism, business, economic development, and lifestyle across the Riviera Maya
  • Javier Mendez — covers crime, courts, law enforcement, and public safety
  • Ana Reyes — covers environmental policy, conservation, infrastructure, and politics across the Yucatán Peninsula
  • Staff Desk — covers local events, cultural celebrations, community stories, and general news from across the region

Staff Desk attribution is used when multiple team members contributed to an article, when an article was produced collaboratively, or when the news warrants rapid publication without individual byline assignment. We are committed to expanding our named contributor roster over time.

Ethics and Conflicts of Interest

  • Editorial team members may not publish articles about organizations in which they hold a financial interest without disclosure.
  • Gifts, travel, or accommodations accepted from story subjects are disclosed in the article.
  • No editorial content is submitted for approval to advertisers, sponsors, or government entities before publication.

User-Generated Content and Comments

Comments and reader submissions are monitored for factual accuracy, relevance, and compliance with our community guidelines. We reserve the right to remove comments that are defamatory, abusive, or demonstrably false.
