José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — The municipal cemetery in the town center is running out of room for new burials, and residents are urging authorities to find land for a new one, a local man said.
Crisanto Suárez Pech said graves are now being placed on top of older ones and that even the walkways are being used, making it urgent to find another site.
“There’s no room left to place anyone, there are no more walkways,” he said. “I think the authorities need to take action and buy another piece of land to build a new cemetery.”
Suárez Pech also mentioned that some residents hold an old belief that opening a new cemetery brings more deaths. According to that popular tradition, when a new cemetery is opened, four bodies must be buried at the four cardinal points of the site before anyone else can be laid to rest there.
“When a new cemetery is opened, when someone dies, four bodies have to be placed at the four cardinal points of the space,” he said.
Beyond the belief, he said the lack of space is already a real problem that requires attention from authorities so the town can have an adequate site for future burials.
