Cancún, Quintana Roo — Fonatur, Mexico’s national tourism promotion fund, will invest 10 million pesos in the Maya Ka’an community tourism destination, funding signage and urban image improvements, a state official said.
Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Quintana Roo’s deputy tourism secretary, said the investment follows the federal government’s designation of Maya Ka’an as the country’s first community tourism destination. He announced the plans after a meeting with the Nautical Associates of Quintana Roo in Cancún.
The signage will not only include informational signs within the destination — for example, pointing to sites linked to the Caste War — but also signs on highways leading to Maya Ka’an, Aguilar Becerril said.
For urban improvements, the project calls for extending the “ancestral pathways” already installed in the center of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. “There are also other issues under study concerning waste, energy and water treatment,” he added.
Project files are currently being compiled, with the goal of executing the projects this year.
“The positive thing is that Fonatur, Conagua (the national water commission) and Conanp (the national protected areas commission) have joined the governing body of the Maya Ka’an destination, which helps a lot,” Aguilar Becerril said. “Although they don’t have voting seats, they are permanently involved in management work.”
