Five Arrested in Deadly Cancún Bar Shooting

Police officers at the scene of the fatal shooting at the El Paisa cocktail bar in Cancun

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Police and state prosecutors arrested five people in connection with the shooting at the “El Paisa” cocktail bar that killed one man and wounded five others on Sunday.

Investigators searched two homes in the Victoria and La Morena neighborhoods of the Supermanzana 243 district, where they seized drugs and a motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack.

Authorities said the assault may have been linked to extortion attempts, but that motive has not been confirmed.

The dead victim was identified as Pablo, a mechanic who was standing near the bar’s entrance when he was hit by gunfire. He died around 11 p.m. Sunday.

The wounded included a waiter, two diners, a woman and a 7-year-old girl. The girl sustained a graze wound to her foot and was released after receiving medical care. The waiter, Luis Felipe, remained hospitalized in serious condition with gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen.

Security camera footage from the area around Niños Héroes Avenue helped investigators trace the suspects’ escape route toward 20 de Noviembre Avenue.

Investigative police identified at least two properties used as hideouts by members of criminal groups in the Victoria and La Morena neighborhoods. The five suspects were taken into custody and are being held for questioning at the prosecutor’s office.
