Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Paoly Perera Maldonado, former mayor of this city and current director of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Institute of Technology, died Monday after a vehicle crash on Federal Highway 307 near the community of Uh May.
According to initial reports, Perera Maldonado was involved in a serious accident while driving through a curve on the stretch of highway that connects Felipe Carrillo Puerto to southern Quintana Roo. Authorities initially reported that she had survived, but later confirmed her death.
Officials have not publicly determined the cause of the accident or provided details on how it occurred or whether other people were involved.
Perera Maldonado served as mayor from 2016 to 2018 and later went on to lead the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Institute of Technology.
Emergency services and authorities responded to the scene. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crash and determine if any responsibility exists.
