Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) is maintaining surveillance operations at tourist hubs across Quintana Roo as the summer vacation season draws to a close, with inspectors stationed at airports, bus terminals, hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related businesses.
No Significant Incidents Reported
Profeco’s regional delegate, José Luis Pineda, said reported issues so far have remained within normal parameters and no extraordinary situations have been recorded. The most common cases include overbooked flights and baggage that fails to arrive at its destination, problems that typically arise during peak travel periods.
Warning Against Attractive Offers
With the holiday season winding down, Pineda urged tourists to exercise extra caution when booking services online, particularly when encountering deals that appear unusually attractive or are priced well below the usual market rate. He warned that such promotions may be linked to fraud attempts and recommended researching companies beforehand, comparing prices, and verifying that the websites used for purchases are trustworthy.
He also advised consumers not to make payments before confirming the legitimacy of the provider and, if necessary, to consult their bank to reduce the risk of fraudulent transactions.
Previous Complaints
During July and August 2025, Profeco received 48 complaints related to travel agencies, airlines, timeshare companies, car rental services and other tourism-related businesses. Claims filed during that period totaled 14,835 pesos, of which the agency recovered 6,000 pesos for consumers.
Profeco will continue its operations through the end of the vacation season, focusing on the areas of Quintana Roo with the heaviest tourist traffic.
