Tulum, Quintana Roo — The municipal treasurer of Tulum, Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada, submitted an irrevocable resignation effective July 3, the city council announced in an official statement.
In a letter addressed to Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo, Aldape Moncada cited personal reasons for his decision and thanked the administration for the trust placed in him to manage the city’s finances.
“Being part of this administration represented an important professional challenge and a valuable opportunity to contribute, from the realm of public finance, to institutional strengthening and the development of the municipal government,” he wrote.
The city council acknowledged his service, stating: “We appreciate the commitment, dedication, and work carried out by Vicente Aldape Moncada during his time in this administration. We wish him success in the personal and professional projects he undertakes.”
The resignation came one day after National Guard officers detained Aldape Moncada at the Cancun International Airport and turned him over to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR).
According to the National Detention Registry, the arrest occurred at the passenger screening area of Terminal 2.
The FGR has not officially disclosed the reasons for the detention. Preliminary reports suggest it may be related to the alleged possession of a firearm, but federal authorities have not confirmed this.
Aldape Moncada’s departure comes amid political speculation that his name had been floated as a potential candidate for the Morena party in the 2027 municipal election in Tulum.
The former official’s legal status remains under review by federal prosecutors, who will determine his legal situation in the coming hours.
