Accident Disrupts Tourists’ Visit to Cenote on Tulum-Cobá Highway

A motorcycle and a rented car after colliding at the entrance to Cenote Atik on the Tulum-Cobá highway in Tulum, Quintana Roo.

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A rented car carrying four tourists collided with a chopper motorcycle Sunday at the entrance to Cenote Atik on the Tulum-Cobá state highway, interrupting the group’s visit but leaving no serious injuries.

The collision caused damage estimated at more than 25,000 pesos to the motorcycle, while the car’s occupants were unharmed. Emergency services were called after the crash because the motorcyclist’s condition was initially unknown.

Paramedics from Hospital Tulum examined the rider, who did not require transport to a medical center despite the impact and damage to his bike.

The tourists were traveling from east to west in a Kia with Yucatán license plates ZCJ-834-H. According to witnesses, the driver was turning into the cenote access when the motorcycle hit the vehicle.

The car carried two men and two women. The driver was Venezuelan, accompanied by another man and two young women from California. The group had planned to visit Cenote Atik as part of their vacation.

After the accident, the visitors paused their outing while they contacted the rental company to arrange insurance coverage. The motorcycle sustained the most significant damage, according to preliminary estimates.

Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution at the entrances to cenotes and other attractions along the Tulum-Cobá highway, where vehicles frequently pull in and out of traffic. Maintaining a safe distance, using turn signals and checking for oncoming vehicles before turning are key to preventing similar incidents.
