Tulum has set its sights on achieving Platinum status for five of its beaches by 2025. The city also plans to secure the White Flag or Sustainable Clean Beach certification for three coastal locations, according to the municipal director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat).

The beaches earmarked for Platinum status are predominantly located within the Tulum National Park. These include Pescadores, Maya, and Santa Fe, as well as DIF Aventuras in Akumal. Efforts are underway to meet the requirements set by the NOM-020-Semarnat (Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources) to secure the White Flag designation for Pescadores, Maya, and Santa Fe beaches.

To achieve this, the city is working on clearly defining swimming areas, installing signage, and conducting water quality tests. This is to assure tourists and swimmers that these resorts meet all necessary conditions for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Besides these measures, the city is also focusing on providing essential services at these access points. These include bathrooms, drinking fountains, lifeguard towers, and rest areas.

The city is making steady progress towards its goals. For instance, it aims to secure Platinum recognition for Mangle beach, located within the National Park, this year.

In addition to these recognitions, Tulum also aspires to receive the Blue Flag distinction. This international recognition is awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches, marinas, and tourist boats that meet specific criteria for quality, safety, education, and environmental information.
