Tulum, Quintana Roo — Basic education enrollment in Tulum has climbed to roughly 14,000 students for the 2026-2027 school year, an increase of about 2,700 compared with the previous cycle, according to Manuel Antonio de la Torre Flota, coordinator of Quintana Roo educational services in the municipality.
De la Torre Flota said the prior cycle had been expected to bring about 13,000 students, but only around 11,000 enrolled. Preliminary records for the new school year now point to close to 14,000 students, representing a gain of roughly 2,700 over the previous period.
Responding to claims that an earlier enrollment decline was linked to the local economic situation and families returning to their home states, he said the current official figures show growth and cannot be directly attributed to any crisis. He argued the rise reflects growing confidence in Tulum and credited part of the trend to federal initiatives under President Claudia Sheinbaum, suggesting some families are returning to the municipality.
The increase has put pressure on some schools, especially Cecyte and the Erick Paolo telesecundaria, mainly during morning shifts. However, De la Torre Flota explained that overenrollment in certain groups or shifts does not mean there are no available spaces. The main challenge, he said, is that parents want their children in a specific school and shift, which makes it difficult to accommodate every request.
At the upper secondary level, he assured that coverage is available through the municipality’s five high schools, as well as Saturday programs. At the secondary level, options include telesecundaria, general secondary, and Aldea Tulum secondary, which will expand by two additional groups.
De la Torre Flota added that he recently met with Quintana Roo Education Secretary Elda Xix Euán and upper secondary-level staff to help students who had not yet been assigned to a class, offering alternatives to ensure no one is left without a place to continue their studies.
