Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Puerto Morelos held the first session of the Municipal Committee for AIDS Prevention (COMUSIDA) in 2026, reporting that more than 2,180 rapid tests for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been administered as part of ongoing prevention efforts.

During the meeting, which included municipal officials, health sector representatives, and human rights organizations, authorities presented a report on preventive actions carried out across the municipality. These included informational talks and awareness campaigns in community programs, schools, and workplaces, reaching over 540 women, 430 men, and 655 students.

Gerardo Mas Canul, director of Programs for Welfare, speaking on behalf of Welfare Secretary Alexander May Chi, emphasized the importance of continuously evaluating the committee’s actions. “It is essential to measure the results of each strategy to ensure we meet the main goal: preventing the spread of these diseases and providing timely care to those living with them,” he said.

Sara Nohemí Rodríguez Torres, director of Health, presented the department’s activity report, highlighting ongoing presence in communities, schools, and workplaces through information sessions, counseling, and rapid testing for HIV and other STIs.

The Directorate of Sexual Diversity also reported on its work with vulnerable populations. It requested 500 rapid HIV tests and 500 syphilis tests from Health Jurisdiction No. 2. Since November 2025, about 136 tests have been administered, with 10 reactive results leading to referrals for specialized medical care. Additionally, 600 male condoms were distributed as part of prevention strategies.

The directorate also participated in two editions of the “Miércoles Ciudadano” program, activities for Pride Day 2026, prevention sessions in the hotel sector, and training for companies in the “Puerto de Inclusión” certification program.

Councilman Antonio Chuc Pech stressed the need to build public trust so people feel comfortable getting tested. “We must guarantee confidentiality and provide support to those who test positive, so they receive timely care and assistance,” he said.

Councilman Jairo Elián Botes Betancourt, president of the Health Commission, reaffirmed the City Council’s support for preventive actions. He noted that Quintana Roo continues to rank among the states with the highest incidence of STIs, so coordinated efforts will continue, especially among vulnerable groups and the general population.

Alan Pat, ombudsman from the State Human Rights Commission of Quintana Roo (CDHEQROO), said the agency provides support to citizens to ensure access to health services and protection of their human rights.

Other attendees included Dr. Laird Darren López Mejia from the Puerto Health Center; Vanessa López Páez, director of the DIF Puerto Morelos system; Arlette Escudero Ordóñez, director of the Municipal Women’s Institute; Sara Eugenia Sánchez Canul, head of Education in the municipality; and Ernesto León Villanueva, director of Youth, along with other public servants and committee members.
