Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government hosted the El Cangrejito Playero Isleño Ceviche Contest as part of the 176th anniversary of the founding of Isla Mujeres, with Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde leading the event.
The competition brought together local chefs and home cooks to showcase their versions of ceviche, one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most emblematic dishes. Organizers said the goal was to preserve the island’s culinary heritage and strengthen residents’ sense of identity. Participants used fresh, locally sourced ingredients in their recipes.
Judges evaluated each entry on flavor, presentation, and adherence to the traditional recipe. The five finalists received cash prizes:
- 1st place: Pablo Enrique Castillo — 10,000 pesos
- 2nd place: Diego Martín Rosado — 7,500 pesos
- 3rd place: Pedro Canche — 5,000 pesos
- 4th place: Daniel Ruiz — 3,500 pesos
- 5th place: Jacob Levi Quintero — 2,000 pesos
The contest has become a staple of the anniversary celebrations, highlighting the cultural value of the island’s culinary traditions.
