PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen residents are being invited to register for a new municipal discount program designed to encourage local shopping, support established businesses and keep more consumer spending inside the municipality.
The program, called Pase Playense, is a free preferred-benefits card promoted by the administration of Mayor Estefanía Mercado. It offers cardholders access to discounts, promotions and exclusive benefits at participating businesses across Playa del Carmen, including hospitals, health and beauty providers, service businesses and other local establishments.
The municipal government first presented Pase Playense on May 22, 2026, describing it as both a physical and digital card aimed at strengthening the local economy and creating a direct connection between residents and local businesses. At the launch, officials said the program was intended to build an alliance between citizens, private enterprise and government so that everyday spending would remain in Playa del Carmen and benefit local merchants, entrepreneurs and service providers.
According to the most recent municipal update, the program now includes 183 registered companies, representing more than 180 participating establishments offering discounts and benefits to residents. The number has grown since the initial presentation, when officials reported more than 150 benefits and about 75 participating brands.
Estefanía Hernández, Playa del Carmen’s Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, said the program could generate an estimated annual savings of 36,254 pesos per user. That figure is based on a cardholder using each available benefit once during the year, according to the municipality. Hernández noted that some discounts may be used more than once, meaning actual savings could be higher for residents who use the card regularly.
Officials project that Pase Playense could benefit more than 100,000 cardholders in the coming months. The stated goal is to strengthen what the municipality describes as a circular economy by encouraging residents to buy from businesses established in Playa del Carmen rather than sending more of their spending outside the local market.
The program is also being presented as a tool for formal businesses. By joining the network, participating merchants can offer discounts to local residents while gaining visibility through the municipal platform. During the May launch, the municipal government said it was working with business organizations including CANACO Servytur, COPARMEX and CANACINTRA to expand the list of affiliated businesses. Authorities also encouraged participating businesses to offer discounts preferably above 15 percent, with benefits expected to remain valid until September 2027.
The card is free for residents. Registration opened June 30 and will remain available through July 24, 2026. Interested residents must register through the official Pase Playense platform, validate their information and then use the card to access available promotions at participating businesses.
The program comes as Playa del Carmen continues to promote local identity and business development under its new municipal name. Officials have framed Pase Playense as more than a coupon card, presenting it as a way to reinforce local pride, support formal commerce and give residents a practical incentive to choose businesses based in their own city.
Participating businesses include restaurants, hospitals, beauty and health services, and other local enterprises. For residents, the value of the program will depend on which businesses they already use and how often they take advantage of the discounts. For local businesses, the success of the card will likely depend on whether it brings in repeat customers rather than one-time discount shoppers.
Municipal officials say the broader objective is simple: encourage “playenses de corazón” to spend locally, support local jobs and ensure that more of the money generated in Playa del Carmen stays in Playa del Carmen.
Registration opened June 30 and closes July 24. Interested residents can sign up for free at www.paseplayense.enplaya.mx.
