Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of the El Fundador neighborhood partially blocked Sian Ka’an Avenue on Wednesday morning to demand a solution to an electrical outage that has left several families without power since Friday.
About 30 demonstrators gathered near Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue and used stones and other objects to stop vehicles from passing through the area.
Neighbors said a transformer failure cut electricity to at least two blocks in the neighborhood. The blackout has spoiled stored food and made everyday activities difficult, they told local media.
Protesters called on the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) to repair the fault and replace the damaged equipment. They warned that the blockade will remain in place until they get a response and did not rule out extending the protest if service is not restored.
Police officers arrived at the scene and spoke with the demonstrators, but there were no reports of authorities trying to break up the protest.
