Mexico City — Mexican rock band Maná will perform during the halftime show of the World Cup round of 16 match between Mexico and England, adding a musical layer to the already heated rivalry.
The match, scheduled for Sunday at the Estadio Ciudad de México, will be the last World Cup game held in the capital. Maná, a four-time Grammy and nine-time Latin Grammy winner, will make its first halftime appearance at the tournament.
The announcement comes after Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher predicted on social media that England would win 5-0. Maná lead singer Fher Olvera responded on X with a simple “ubícate” (get real), wrapping himself in the Mexican flag.
Maná already performed at the World Cup’s opening ceremony, captivating a global audience of more than 1.1 billion with a rendition of “Oye mi amor” accompanied by pre-Hispanic dancers.
The band is celebrating 40 years of music this year and continues its Vivir Sin Aire Tour, with stops in Bogotá, Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, and two shows at Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros.
Shakira, Madonna, and BTS have been confirmed for the tournament’s closing ceremony.
