Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Playa del Carmen city council has donated land to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) for the construction of four childcare centers and two family medicine clinics, aiming to address a severe shortage of services for residents.
José Agustín Aguilar, the municipal trustee, confirmed the donation, noting that the current IMSS childcare facility in Playa del Carmen only has space for about 12% of eligible beneficiaries. The new Centers for Education and Childcare (CECI) will be built on four donated plots across the city.
The donated land parcels are located at:
- Avenida Flor de Ciruelo with Rascones, in Las Palmas 1
- Flor de Ciruelo with Avenida de las Cigüeñas, in Real Ibiza
- Avenida Constituyentes with Flor de Acanto, in Misión de las Flores
- Tumben Kin with Ich Xeel, in the Los Olivos 3 subdivision
Additionally, the council confirmed the handover of two more plots, including one in Puerto Aventuras, for the construction of two Family Medicine Units.
According to data, Playa del Carmen has an estimated population of 9,500 children aged zero to four years, with 1,700 requiring IMSS childcare spots. The new facilities are expected to significantly expand capacity for the city’s growing population.
