Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Children, young people, and adults got a close look at the island’s bird diversity during a birdwatching session at Parque Urbano Corazón, where participants learned to identify species and understand their role in local ecosystems.
The activity was organized by the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) and the group Pajareando Cozumel, whose members led the walk and explained the birds’ characteristics, behaviors, and the proper ways to observe them without disturbing their habitat.
Armed with binoculars, attendees toured the park to spot birds by their colors, shapes, and songs. The outing aimed to bring residents closer to local wildlife and underscore the value of natural spaces within the urban area.
The event also highlighted the importance of conserving areas that serve as refuge and habitat for species on the island. Biologist Adrián Tun Cano, the park manager, said direct contact with biodiversity can help spark greater interest in its protection.
The walk was led by María Carolina Can Martínez and Germán Arturo Borges Arceo of Pajareando Cozumel and is part of the environmental education efforts carried out by the FPMC to connect the community with the island’s natural heritage.
