Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Recurring power outages in Playa del Carmen are affecting the performance of hotel workers, who are arriving to work exhausted after sleepless nights without air conditioning or fans, according to Uri Carmona, the CROC union delegate in Quintana Roo.
Carmona said the blackouts, combined with high temperatures, are preventing many workers and their families from sleeping at night. “Many workers aren’t resting because they can’t sleep well, especially with the heat. That doesn’t help at all,” he said.
The union leader said the outages are not the fault of the municipal government but of the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission), which he said must take responsibility for informing residents and dealing with the fallout.
He added that residents in several neighborhoods are already organizing protests over the electricity failures, and that demands should be directed at the CFE.
Carmona also urged the CFE to explain what work it is doing to fix the failures and strengthen the power grid, saying the lack of information is fueling public anger.
The blackouts have already taken a toll on the local economy and the image of the tourist destination, affecting businesses, hotels, restaurants, tourists and thousands of families, warned Valeria Rindertsma, president of the Riviera Maya chapter of the Mexican Association of Business Women (AMEXME).
