Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The charging, operations and maintenance facility for the electric buses that will serve Chetumal’s urban transit system is nearly complete and will open in the coming days, according to the head of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).
Rafael Hernández Kotasek said the facility, located within the Polo de Desarrollo complex on the edge of the city, will support the operation of the fully electric, Mexican-made buses and mark a shift toward more modern and sustainable mobility.
“We are in the final preparations for the opening of the space and electro-terminal station for the Taruk buses, made in Mexico and 100 percent electric,” he said. “We have conducted charging tests, and the important announcement is that it will be operational in the coming days. It is being built next to the Polo de Desarrollo, near the IMSS hospital and the Bienestar market. This space will serve as a charging point and electro-terminal for these units.”
The terminal, which will also house the buses, will include a solar park to power and charge the batteries, with a system designed to supply the energy needed for efficient operation.
Of the 60 buses planned for the city, five will initially be added to existing routes, giving riders access to newer, safer and more inclusive models, Hernández Kotasek said.
“In the coming days we will officially launch this first route, 100 percent made in Mexico, with the first five of the 60 units to meet the demand of our capital,” he said. “For the first time in 15 years, Chetumal will have mass public transit.”
The official emphasized that the project advances the city’s comprehensive transportation plan while promoting clean energy through a safe, environmentally friendly transit model that emits no pollutants.
