Man Drowns in Cancún Lagoon After Being Reported Missing

Emergency personnel search the ABC lagoon in Cancún for a missing swimmer.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man believed to be between 30 and 35 years old drowned Wednesday night in the ABC lagoon, behind the San José school in Cancún’s El Pedregal neighborhood.

Relatives reported him missing after he entered the water in the late afternoon and disappeared from view. After an unsuccessful search on their own, they called the 911 emergency line, according to initial reports.

The C5 security complex activated rescue protocols and dispatched municipal police officers, firefighters, civil protection personnel and paramedics to the end of Cancún Avenue, behind the San José school. Emergency workers spoke with the family and began searching the lagoon’s surroundings. Minutes later, they found the man floating in the water, and civil protection personnel brought his body to shore.

Municipal police officers cordoned off the area and notified the State Prosecutor’s Office. Investigative police and forensics experts arrived to complete the necessary procedures and recover the body, which was taken to the Forensic Medical Service for an autopsy and identification.

According to initial details, the man had been spending time with family and friends when they decided to go swimming. At some point, they lost sight of him and could not find him, so they requested emergency help.

Residents of the area have warned about the dangers of swimming in the ABC lagoon, where previous drownings have occurred. Despite the risks, some people continue to enter the water, especially in conditions that are not safe for swimming.

Authorities will determine the exact circumstances of the death through investigation and forensic studies.
