Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Thousands of vehicle owners in Quintana Roo may have free third-party liability insurance provided by the state government as part of the 2026 license plate exchange program, but many beneficiaries do not know how to obtain the policy or what to do in case of an accident.
The insurance was announced as an incentive for those who completed the plate exchange within the period set by state authorities. However, many drivers say they never received a physical or digital document confirming the coverage, despite completing the process on time.
The lack of information has created uncertainty among motorists, who do not know basic details such as the insurer’s name, policy number, coverage period, or contact numbers to report an accident.
Insurance experts recommend verifying that the plate exchange was done during the period when the benefit was active and keeping the corresponding payment receipts. They suggest visiting the Quintana Roo Tax Administration Service (SATQ) offices to confirm that the vehicle is part of the program and request the policy or coverage certificate.
Drivers should ask for the insurer’s name, policy or master policy number, coverage period, maximum coverage amounts, and phone numbers for reporting accidents.
According to the program’s conditions, the benefit is a third-party liability insurance that covers property damage or injuries caused to others in a traffic accident. It generally does not cover damage to the insured vehicle or theft, unless the policy includes additional benefits.
In case of an accident, experts recommend contacting the insurer immediately to request an adjuster and avoid making direct financial agreements before reporting the incident, as this could affect the claims process. Drivers should also have a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration card, official ID, proof of plate exchange payment, and the insurance coverage document.
The lack of direct policy delivery has left many citizens unaware of their coverage. Several drivers have asked the state government to improve communication on how to check coverage, download documents, and use the benefit.
In the meantime, experts advise those who completed the plate exchange on time to go directly to SATQ and request their insurance information in writing, as having the policy and contact numbers can be crucial in the event of an accident.
