Cancun, Quintana Roo — A judge has formally charged Helbert Ariel N. with the murder of a man whose body was discovered inside a taxi in the Mexico neighborhood on May 12.
During the hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that convinced the judge to proceed with a trial for aggravated homicide, the State Prosecutor’s Office said.
A key piece of evidence was a 9mm pistol seized from Helbert Ariel N. at the time of his arrest. Ballistic tests using the IBIS system matched the weapon to the homicide of the unidentified victim.
The victim was found dead inside a taxi belonging to the Andres Quintana Roo union, prompting a large police response.
Investigators also recovered a magazine with live rounds from the taxi, which they say matches the suspect’s weapon.
Authorities said the murder may be linked to drug dealing, one of several lines of investigation still open.
This is not Helbert Ariel N.’s first encounter with the justice system. He had previously been charged with drug possession for marijuana.
The suspect will remain in pretrial detention while the case proceeds.
