Nichupté Bridge Hosts Second Family Recreation Day in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — For the second time, the Nichupté Bridge traded its usual traffic for a four-hour family festival on Sunday evening.

Governor Mara Lezama led the event, dubbed “Puenteando Nichupté,” which drew thousands of cyclists, runners, skaters, and families to the roughly 8-kilometer span over the Nichupté Lagoon. The event ran from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and included sports, cultural, musical, gastronomic, and recreational activities.

Lezama completed the route by bicycle and stopped at various stations along the viaduct to interact with families, athletes, artisans, entrepreneurs, and visitors.

The initiative aims to promote active mobility, family togetherness, and public ownership of shared spaces as part of broader peace-building efforts.

Organizers said the second edition builds on the success of the first event in July, which attracted about 6,000 people. The program will now take place on the last Sunday of every month.

Four themed pavilions were set up for the event: Playful, Entrepreneur, Sports, and Gastronomic, offering activities for different age groups and interests.

Rafael Hernández Kotasek, director of the Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO), said the event expands the concept of mobility and helps make the city more humane, healthy, and inclusive.

The event involved 20 state and municipal agencies and departments, coordinated by IMOVEQROO. Authorities deployed a security operation that included hydration stations, civil protection modules, portable restrooms, ambulances, paramedics, and officers from the Citizen Security Secretariat, as well as road patrol units. A designated safety point was also set up to assist children if needed.

The second edition reinforced the bridge’s new role as a community space for recreation and active mobility in Cancún.
