Playa del Carmen Residents Donate Hair to Create Oil Spill Barriers for Gulf of Mexico

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A community-led environmental campaign in this coastal city collected approximately 20 kilograms of human hair over the weekend, material that will be used to create organic barriers to help contain oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.

The initiative, organized by the collective Ayudar Está de Pelos, saw dozens of residents visit several collection points across Playa del Carmen to donate hair through free haircuts. The activity aimed to utilize hair as a natural absorbent in environmental cleanup tasks.

Over two days, volunteers performed 138 free haircuts with the help of seven volunteer hairstylists and logistical support from 12 people. The campaign operated from four locations in the city.

Local collection efforts were supplemented by an additional six kilograms of hair sent from the nearby island of Cozumel, increasing the total volume of material for the environmental strategy.

The collected hair will be processed to manufacture absorbent barriers capable of retaining hydrocarbons, a technique used in various countries to address petroleum spills and reduce the impact of pollutants on water bodies.

Organizers noted that human hair possesses properties that allow it to capture oils and petroleum derivatives, making its use in handmade barriers a sustainable, low-cost alternative for environmental emergencies.

The campaign was designed to facilitate direct public participation in environmental protection through a simple process where people could donate part of their hair while receiving a free haircut from volunteers.

According to the collective, the response in Playa del Carmen confirmed citizen interest in engaging in concrete actions to address large-scale environmental problems, particularly those linked to marine pollution.

The hair collection will not end with this weekend’s drive. The organizing group announced it will continue accepting hair at enabled salons and collection centers to increase the volume of material available for future shipments to areas affected by hydrocarbons.

The strategy includes maintaining permanent reception points at participating establishments, where clean, dry hair will be accepted for integration into the absorbent barrier production process.

Campaign organizers stated their goal is to consolidate a regional network of citizen support to enable a rapid response when material is needed to address pollution incidents.

The initiative remains open to new volunteers, hairstylists, and establishments interested in joining the collection effort under a framework aimed at expanding the environmental impact of this community action in the municipality.
