Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa attended the reopening ceremony for Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resorts on Tuesday, emphasizing the project will generate prosperity and demonstrating investor confidence in Quintana Roo’s tourism sector.
Lezama joined Graciela Hank González, owner of Grupo Hermes División Turismo, and Gabriel Felip, president of Hyatt International for Latin America and the Caribbean, for the ribbon-cutting event at the mainland Isla Mujeres resort.
The governor noted that the mainland Isla Mujeres area achieved over 85% hotel occupancy during the recent holiday season and continues to expand. “Tourists want to vacation in the World Capital of Vacations,” Lezama said, adding that she has started the modernization and expansion of the Cancún-Isla Blanca highway as promised. “We’ll begin with two kilometers, then another two, and keep advancing because this destination deserves to keep growing and have a tourism corridor at the level of investment you’re making,” she added.
Felip said the ribbon-cutting ceremony represents the best way to renew Hyatt’s commitment to caring for people, the destination’s prosperity, and developing Quintana Roo’s potential. Hyatt manages 32 resorts in Latin America and the Caribbean representing more than 13,000 rooms and providing direct employment for over 19,000 families.
For the resort’s reopening, Hyatt redesigned all 424 rooms with a contemporary concept, enhanced the premium experience offerings with a new building featuring its own club and private beach, and developed new culinary and entertainment options.
Hank González recounted her family’s involvement in creating Playa Mujeres, which with this renovation positions itself in Mexico and worldwide, consolidating Quintana Roo’s tourism offerings for increasingly demanding guests. She affirmed that with the commitment for this investment to truly impact families, boost tourism, and protect nature, this development will continue benefiting more than 1,400 families who work there.
Following the official ceremony, attendees toured the complex, which included a drone show, photographs with resort staff, and visits to guest rooms.
Also present were Alberto Vitar Hank, president of the Capital, Infrastructure and Golf Course Fund of Playa Mujeres; Carlos de la Isla Corry, general director of Grupo Hermes presidential offices; Carlos Alberto Andrade Téllez, deputy general director of administration and finance for Grupo Hermes; José Aguilar Rodríguez, municipal trustee of Isla Mujeres; Andrés Aguilar Becerril, undersecretary of Tourism for Quintana Roo; and Flavio Carlos Rosado, state health secretary.
