Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was taken into custody Friday night after shoppers said they saw him trying to break into a parked car in the Walmart parking lot in the Cruz de Servicios neighborhood.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at Avenida 115 and Avenida Luis Donaldo Colosio, where witnesses saw the suspect apparently attempting to open a vehicle, according to reports.
Shoppers chased the man and cornered him near a First Cash store while calling for authorities. Officers from Playa del Carmen’s Public Security Department arrived minutes later, took the suspect into custody and transported him to police headquarters to determine his legal status.
Customers at the supermarket said attempted vehicle break-ins are not isolated incidents in the area and questioned the parking lot’s safety, particularly at night, citing poor lighting in large sections as a vulnerability that thieves could exploit.
