Playa del Carmen Promotes Sargasso Use to Strengthen Livestock Farming

Ranchers and officials gather at Rancho Tigre Grande to discuss using sargasso as a soil improver and feed supplement.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government is promoting the use of sargasso as a resource to boost livestock production, turning an environmental challenge into an opportunity for sustainable agriculture.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Department, led by Alejandro López, participated in a workshop titled “Livestock Talk on the Use of Sargasso in Field Production” held at the Rancho Tigre Grande experimental production unit. The event was organized with Fernando Chico Hall, a livestock producer and member of the Local Livestock Association of Playa del Carmen, and brought together producers interested in learning about ways to use sargasso strategically.

During the session, López emphasized the importance of providing producers with information and experiences that can turn an environmental problem into a development opportunity for the agricultural sector through sustainable and productive practices.

Participants discussed various uses for sargasso, particularly as a soil improver and as a potential input to strengthen livestock production systems, while also helping to address the impacts of sargasso accumulation on the coast.

The training involved 15 livestock producers from Playa del Carmen, who shared experiences and analyzed the possibilities of incorporating this natural resource into their production processes.
