Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was injured Wednesday night after being struck by a mototaxi while trying to save his dog from a fight with other animals in the Palmas Turquesa neighborhood.
The victim was walking his dog along the main avenue when the dog began fighting with other animals nearby, according to preliminary reports. The owner stepped off the sidewalk onto the road to intervene and was hit by a passing mototaxi.
The man fell to the pavement and suffered multiple injuries. Bystanders called 911, and paramedics arrived minutes later. After providing pre-hospital care, they determined he needed to be taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
Unlike many hit-and-run incidents, the mototaxi driver remained at the scene and activated his insurance policy to cover the costs. Municipal traffic officers also arrived to determine responsibility. Because the driver was willing to cover damages through insurance, both parties reached an agreement on site.
The exact severity of the man’s injuries has not been released.
This is not the first mototaxi-related accident in Playa del Carmen in recent weeks. On May 28, a minor on a motorcycle was injured after being hit by a mototaxi in Villas del Sol. On May 16, a woman was also injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a mototaxi on Avenida 135.
