Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man has been sentenced to 41 years in prison for the murder of a woman at a gas station in Playa del Carmen in October 2022, the state prosecutor’s office announced Monday.
Ricardo Alvarado Rayón was found guilty of aggravated homicide after a trial in which prosecutors presented evidence linking him to the shooting death of the woman, whose identity has been withheld.
State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar announced the verdict during a press conference for the Quintana Roo Peace Table. He said the court issued the conviction after reviewing evidence presented by the specialized prosecution unit during the oral trial.
The victim died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Attack at Gas Station
According to the investigation, the incident occurred on October 19, 2022, at a gas station at the intersection of Avenidas 125 and Constituyentes in Playa del Carmen.
Alvarado Rayón approached the woman as she sat at the location, pulled out a firearm from his belongings, and shot her directly, killing her instantly, investigators said.
After the attack, the suspect fled in a white pickup truck toward the Misión Las Flores neighborhood.
Arrest Shortly After the Crime
Authorities located Alvarado Rayón at the intersection of Avenidas CTM and Luis Donaldo Colosio in the Real Ibiza subdivision, where they arrested him in possession of a semiautomatic pistol.
During the trial, testimony from the arresting officers, along with forensic and investigative evidence presented by the prosecution, led the judge to conclude there was sufficient evidence to issue a conviction.
Fine and Restitution Ordered
In addition to the 41-year prison term, the judge imposed a fine of 240,550 pesos (about $12,000). Alvarado Rayón must also pay 10,372 pesos (about $520) for moral damages and 864,350 pesos (about $43,000) for material damages.
The announcement was made during the Peace Table conference, which also included State Government Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez, Public Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres, and commanders from the Mexican Army, National Guard, and Navy.
