Tulum, Quintana Roo — Fruit shops and supermarkets across Cancún and the Riviera Maya are experiencing shortages of Ataulfo mangoes, with prices at some locations exceeding 100 pesos per kilogram.
The shortage stands in contrast with other produce. Lemons, which cost as much as 60 pesos per kilogram a few months ago, are now selling for less than 8 pesos per kilogram.
In Cancún, stalls at Mercado 23 are offering the fruit for up to 120 pesos per kilogram, while supermarkets in Playa del Carmen are selling it for 90 pesos. In Tulum, the mango has become increasingly scarce, and vendors report difficulty obtaining supplies.
At Aki and Bodega Aurrerá supermarkets in Tulum, staff said Ataulfo mangoes stopped arriving several weeks ago because suppliers are running short. Although other mango varieties are available, Ataulfo remains one of the most popular among customers and a top seller at street stalls.
Marco Caamal, a seller at the Doña Julia fruit and vegetable shop, said he has been requesting the product from suppliers for more than two weeks without getting regular deliveries. He said some retailers are charging more than 100 pesos per kilogram, but his shop plans to sell the mango at 53 pesos per kilogram to avoid passing the increase on to consumers.
The mango situation also contrasts with other products. Caamal noted that lemons, which sold for more than 60 pesos per kilogram last April, are now below 8 pesos per kilogram due to seasonal availability.
