Cancún, Quintana Roo — Three young people, apparently minors, were injured early Saturday when a gray Ford Mustang crashed through the gate of Colegio Libertad in the La Guadalupana neighborhood and burst into flames.
According to initial reports, the car was speeding along Calle 56 near Calle Guadalupana when the driver lost control. The occupants told authorities they had no brakes, but that account has not been confirmed.
The Mustang knocked down the access gate and part of the perimeter wall, entered the school parking lot and slammed into a metal structure. The car caught fire, but all three occupants escaped before flames spread.
They later went to Cancún General Hospital on their own, where two were treated for minor burns and a third for fractures, according to preliminary reports.
Authorities responded to the scene to investigate. The car suffered severe damage, and school facilities were also damaged.
Investigators will determine whether speed, a mechanical failure or another factor caused the driver to lose control. Officials have not released the identities or exact ages of those involved.
