Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man died Sunday evening just yards from the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen after he was reportedly brought to the facility by ambulance but was not treated, according to witnesses.
The incident sparked outrage among bystanders, who questioned the actions of hospital medical and administrative staff. Authorities are now investigating.
The man arrived at the hospital via ambulance with visible facial injuries and appeared to be intoxicated, witnesses said. After being received by hospital personnel, the ambulance left, and the man was allegedly asked to leave the premises without receiving medical care or being kept under observation. Hospital officials have not confirmed this account.
After leaving the hospital, the man remained nearby. When light rain began, he sought shelter at a store a short distance away. Passersby saw him sitting motionless and initially thought he was resting, but when they approached to check on him, he did not respond. They called 911.
Paramedics arrived and confirmed he had no vital signs. He died just meters from the hospital where he had sought help.
Preliminary reports suggest alcohol intoxication may have been a factor, but an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
Police cordoned off the area as investigators and forensic experts processed the scene. The body was taken to the forensic medical service for examination.
The investigation continues to determine the circumstances of the death and whether anyone who interacted with the man bears responsibility.
