How to Reactivate a Suspended RFC With the SAT Online in Minutes

Mexico City — Having an active Registro Federal de Contribuyentes (RFC) is essential for formal employment, issuing invoices, opening bank accounts, and applying for credit. But if your tax ID appears as “Suspended” with the Tax Administration Service (SAT), you could face penalties and blocked transactions.

Checking your Constancia de Situación Fiscal and finding your RFC is no longer active means you should act quickly to avoid problems with the SAT, rejected procedures, or fines.

What Does a Suspended RFC Mean?

When an RFC shows a suspended status, the SAT considers that the person has temporarily stopped their economic or fiscal activities. This does not mean the registration has disappeared or that you need to apply for a new one, but it does impose important restrictions, including:

  • Inability to issue valid electronic invoices.
  • Inability to carry out some tax procedures.
  • Risk that clients or employers will have problems recording transactions.
  • Difficulty accessing certain financial services.

Therefore, before starting any economic or professional activity, it is advisable to verify that your RFC is active.

Why Does the SAT Suspend Your RFC?

There are several reasons a taxpayer may appear with a suspended status. Often, the person themselves requested a suspension of activities when they stopped working as a freelancer or closed a business. It can also happen when tax returns are not filed for long periods or when an update procedure was left incomplete. Common causes include:

  • Voluntary suspension of activities.
  • Prolonged omission of tax filings.
  • Changes in tax regime without completing the process.
  • Administrative errors or inconsistencies in the SAT registry.
  • Incomplete registration in the Federal Taxpayer Registry.

How to Check if Your RFC Is Active or Suspended

The easiest way to know your tax status is by checking your Constancia de Situación Fiscal. Go to the official SAT website and download the document using your RFC and password or e.firma. Inside the file, look for the section “Estatus en el padrón,” which will show one of the following: Active, Suspended, or Canceled. If it says “Active,” you can continue normal tax operations.

How to Reactivate Your RFC With the SAT

The good news is that a suspended RFC can be reactivated through a procedure called Reanudación de Actividades (Resumption of Activities). This can be done directly from the SAT portal without needing a new registration. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the official SAT website.
  2. Log in with your RFC and password or e.firma.
  3. Select “Trámites y servicios” (Procedures and services).
  4. Choose the “RFC” option.
  5. Click on “Reanudación de actividades” (Resumption of activities).
  6. Indicate the date on which you will resume economic activities.
  7. Select the corresponding tax regime.
  8. Download the receipt and your new Constancia de Situación Fiscal.

Once the procedure is complete, your status will return to active, and you can issue invoices again.

What Happens if You Continue Using a Suspended RFC?

Issuing invoices or carrying out economic activities with a suspended registration can have serious consequences. Invoices issued during that period may not be valid for tax purposes, affecting both the taxpayer and their clients. Problems can include rejection of tax receipts, inability to deduct expenses, observations from the SAT, and even financial penalties. Specialists recommend periodically checking your tax status and regularizing any inconsistencies before conducting business operations.
