Jean-Michel Cousteau Foundation Worried Over Maya Train’s Eco Impact

Jean-Michel Cousteau, the head of the Ocean Futures Society Foundation, has expressed his concern about the potential ecological damage caused by the construction and operation of the Maya Train. He communicated this concern in a letter to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The foundation has previously raised concerns about the absence of environmental impact studies prior to the commencement of the Maya Train project. However, they have not received any response to their letters.

The foundation is particularly concerned about the destruction of caves and cenotes, which are natural sinkholes, resulting from the project. They also criticized the decision to employ the National Defense Secretariat to manage harmful fauna.

This includes endangered species such as jaguars, ocelots, and boars. The foundation believes that the construction and operation of the Maya Train could pose a significant threat to these species and their habitats.
