Cancun, Quintana Roo — Eighty teams from Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán gathered in Cancun on Saturday for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Mexico 2026 regional tournament, the fourth time Quintana Roo has hosted the event.

The competition is taking place at the Kuchil Baxal gymnasium, bringing together children and young people aged 8 to 19 in the Elementary, Junior and Senior categories.

During the opening ceremony, Berenice Sosa Osorio, municipal secretary of welfare, highlighted the effort, discipline and teamwork behind each project.

Jorge Andrés Sánchez Estrada, director of WRO Mexico, noted that participation from the southeast region has grown significantly in recent years, rising from 14 teams in 2024 to 80 this year. He also emphasized the increase in female participation among both competitors and coaches.

On behalf of the state government, Cristopher Malpica Morales, director of the Quintana Roo Council for Humanities, Science and Technology (COQCYT), announced that the national stage of the competition will also be held in Cancun in September.

Participating institutions include the Colegio de Bachilleres, CBTIS, Conalep, Cecyte and the Eva Sámano de López Mateos school.
