Cozumel, Quintana Roo — In celebration of World Crocodile Day on June 17, the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) hosted a special event called “The Nocturnal World of Crocodiles” at Punta Sur Eco Park.
The event brought together families for environmental education and wildlife observation activities aimed at raising awareness about the ecological importance of these reptiles.
The program began with an informative talk by biologist Héctor González Cortés, deputy director of Punta Sur, who explained the role of crocodiles as apex predators in ecosystems and their contribution to environmental balance. He also discussed the scientific monitoring efforts on the island to study the species and analyze the local population.
After the talk, participants boarded the catamaran Tatich for a nighttime tour of the lagoon, where they observed crocodiles of various sizes in their natural habitat. During the trip, attendees learned about crocodile behavior, reproduction, and habits, as well as the importance of conserving the wetlands and mangroves where they live.
