Cancun, Quintana Roo — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta oversaw the eighth edition of the city’s free pet sterilization campaign, “Cero Sobreposición Animal de Raíz,” where 100 dogs and cats received surgery.
The event took place at the Bicentenario de la Independencia de México elementary school in Supermanzana 252. Dozens of families brought their pets for the no-cost procedure.
“We are carrying out these sterilizations in an orderly manner across different neighborhoods to reach more residents and provide this completely free service,” Peralta said during her visit.
The mayor thanked residents committed to animal welfare, especially those who rescue, adopt, and care for stray dogs and cats.
Peralta also toured the recovery area, where pets are monitored for about 40 minutes after surgery and receive post-operative care alongside their owners.
She reminded the public that the city is building an Animal Welfare Hospital in Supermanzana 99, which will offer free services including sterilization campaigns and veterinary care.
The surgeries were performed by a team of 10 veterinarians and assistants in spaces set up inside the school.
With this latest drive, the municipal program has achieved:
- 8 sterilization drives completed
- 100 free procedures in this edition
- 427 sterilizations in the previous seven drives
- More than 500 pets benefited overall
The Benito Juárez government said the efforts improve public health, promote responsible pet ownership, and reduce the number of abandoned animals.
