Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Former Playa del Carmen Mayor Lili Campos Miranda has lost an amparo appeal she filed to avoid appearing before the city’s Internal Control Office, clearing the way for the first of 12 administrative case files against her and other former officials to be sent to the Administrative Justice Tribunal.
Cristina Alcérreca, who heads the Internal Control Office, said in an interview that she learned from the press that a federal judge had rejected Campos’ request. The tribunal could impose economic fines or disqualification from holding public office, Alcérreca said.
Each of the 12 case files involves multiple former officials. The first case names six former employees, and the second names another six, she said. The process guarantees the right to a hearing by summoning those involved to respond to the allegations.
Campos, former treasurer Pedro Escobedo, and former entertainment director José Luis Argüelles González failed to appear when summoned. Only Kira Iris San, former general secretary and municipal treasurer, attended.
Campos sought the amparo to avoid appearing and to halt the proceedings. The federal judge rejected the request, ruling that the legal remedy cannot be used to obstruct auditing processes that are mandatory for all former public officials.
In a previous interview, Alcérreca said amparo challenges do not apply at the internal control stage because no action has been taken against former officials that would affect their rights, unlike with a judicial authority.
Alcérreca emphasized that the Playa del Carmen city government will not determine responsibility in any of the cases. That authority rests with the Administrative Justice Tribunal.
