Drunk Driver Crashes Into Tree, Abandons Vehicle in Cancun
Cancun, Quintana Roo — A driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol crashed his car into a tree early Sunday morning on Avenida Chetumal near Periférico, in the Prado Norte neighborhood, then abandoned the vehicle and fled before authorities arrived.
According to initial reports, the driver was speeding and lost control, slamming into a tree on the central median. The impact left him injured, but he left the car and walked away before police arrived.
When traffic officers reached the scene, they found several beer cans inside the vehicle, leading them to believe the driver had been drinking.
Authorities called a tow truck to remove the car and took it to an impound lot.
Because of the damage and the driver’s abandonment of the vehicle, the case will be turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where the owner will face charges. Some witnesses said the driver may live in the Prado Norte neighborhood.
