Cancun Police Arrest Taxi Driver With Guns, Marijuana, and THC-Infused Chocolates

Police hold bags of marijuana and THC chocolates seized from a taxi driver in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — State police arrested a suspected drug dealer in Cancun on Sunday, seizing more than 4 kilograms of marijuana, two firearms, and packages of chocolates laced with THC, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as Edson Jovani N, was taken into custody in the Villas del Caribe neighborhood, in Cancun’s Supermanzana 520. He was inside a taxi that police believe he used for drug trafficking.

Officers from the Quintana Roo Public Security Department’s investigative unit, working alongside personnel from the Mexican Navy, the Army, and the National Guard, spotted the man standing next to the open trunk of a parked car on Villas Marmara Street, between Villas del Jordan and Villas del Mar streets. He was handling several small bags containing a green substance resembling marijuana.

A search revealed that the suspect was carrying a chest bag containing 60 bags of marijuana, 32 doses of crystal meth, and a 9mm pistol with eight rounds. He also had a semi-automatic 9mm submachine gun with a magazine holding six rounds.

Inside the vehicle, a white Nissan Versa with green stripes identifying it as a taxi belonging to the Andres Quintana Roo taxi union, officers found a reusable bag containing eight clear plastic bags, each holding 500 grams of marijuana. They also discovered two small boxes and two large boxes of edible chocolate infused with THC, stamped with a lion and the words “viaje azteca.” In total, 36 pieces of the THC-laced chocolate were seized.

The suspect was handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Drug Dealing, where he faces charges of crimes against health and violations of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives.
