Crime scene tape cordoning off an area of brush along a highway

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Authorities discovered a body Friday morning in brush along Federal Highway 307 near the town of Muyil, on the border between Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Municipal police and agents from the State Prosecutor’s Office arrived at the scene around 8 a.m. and cordoned off the area, which officials said is used as an illegal dump site.

Preliminary reports indicate the victim may be a woman, though authorities have not confirmed the gender.

Investigators said they saw no obvious signs of gunshot wounds on the body. An autopsy and forensic tests will determine the cause of death.

The remains were taken to the Forensic Medical Service for identification.
