Tulum, Quintana Roo — With eight restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide, Tulum now holds more of these distinctions than any other destination in Quintana Roo, and local restaurant leaders say they are determined to turn that recognition into a lasting boost for the city’s food scene.
Karla Medel, the Tulum representative of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac), said the Michelin-recognized establishments can serve as a spearhead to give the area’s cuisine greater visibility.
She noted that the distinctions are the result of hard work by restaurant owners, chefs, and their teams, but also a powerful tool for cementing Tulum’s reputation as a culinary destination.
“These Michelin mentions, which they have earned through their own effort and that of everyone who represents these restaurants, are also a fundamental part of what Tulum symbolizes for us restaurateurs,” Medel said.
She also stressed that the presence of Michelin-recognized restaurants generates broader promotion for the destination while benefiting the wider restaurant community.
“They really help the rest of us restaurants gain more visibility. Tulum’s visibility is enormous because of these mentions,” she said.
Medel called on restaurants holding Michelin distinctions to join Canirac, saying greater coordination between establishments of all sizes and recognition levels would strengthen the entire sector.
“What we want is to invite these restaurants to join our chamber so that we can all become stronger, from the smallest place to the ones with Michelin mentions,” she said.
According to Medel, Quintana Roo has 13 Michelin mentions in total, and eight of them belong to restaurants in Tulum, placing the municipality in a standout position within the state’s gastronomic landscape.
“We are truly a municipality with a lot of strength in gastronomy. We are very strong. So we have to push this forward and make ourselves seen,” she concluded.
