Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Playa del Carmen has published a national public tender for the rehabilitation of the access road to Punta Esmeralda beach, with an investment exceeding 23 million pesos (about $1.15 million USD) financed through federal funds.

The tender follows the city’s acquisition of property titles for the access from the Grand Coral residential and tourist complex, and approval from the Municipal Development Planning Committee (Coplademun).

According to the tender terms, interested companies may conduct a site inspection on July 8, while the presentation and opening of proposals is scheduled for July 20.

The winning company must complete the work within 120 business days. If the timeline holds, construction would begin August 3 and conclude November 30.

Doris Aké Sierra, Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works, said the project aims to improve safety, accessibility, and urban image at one of the municipality’s most visited public beaches.

Planned improvements include reconstructing the access road, installing a welcome arch, and building an embankment to correct subsidence in the area. The project also incorporates universal accessibility features such as tactile paving and handrails for people with visual impairments.

The rehabilitation will preserve existing parking spaces, including those reserved for people with disabilities and emergency vehicles.

The work will be funded through the Municipal Social Infrastructure Contributions Fund (FAISMUN), part of the city’s planned investments in public infrastructure.
