Police tape cordoning off a dirt road in Las Torres neighborhood after a shooting

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Two men, believed by residents to be extortion collectors, were shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in the irregular settlement of Las Torres.

The attack occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on an unnamed dirt road between the third and fourth towers of the neighborhood, according to authorities.

Preliminary reports indicate the victims were intercepted by several individuals who fired multiple shots before fleeing in an unknown direction.

Local residents told police the men were allegedly collecting protection money from people living in the area.

Municipal police officers arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. Agents from the State Prosecutor’s Office are gathering evidence.

Paramedics also responded but could only confirm that both men had no vital signs.

No arrests have been reported. A large-scale operation has been deployed in the area to locate the suspects.

Forensic investigators are processing the scene and will transfer the bodies to the Medical Examiner’s Service (Semefo).
