Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Argentine tourists and residents gathered in the streets of Playa del Carmen on Tuesday to celebrate their national team’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
One group of fans congregated in the city center at the corner of Calle 6 and Avenida 20, where the match was broadcast on a 50-inch television.
The thrilling game, which nearly ended in a draw, saw Argentina mount a comeback. Fans cheered every play with passion, erupting in tears and shouts of joy as their team secured the win.
Lionel Messi was the standout player for Argentina, the reigning world champions.
Playa del Carmen is a favorite destination for Argentine tourists, many of whom eventually settle in the city. An estimated 12,000 to 14,000 Argentines live in the Riviera Maya region, primarily in Playa del Carmen, as well as nearby Tulum, Puerto Aventuras, and Puerto Morelos.
