Tulum Authorities Shut Down Jaguar Park Access Booth Amid Irregular Fee Allegations

Municipal inspectors place closure seals on a booth at the north entrance of Jaguar Park in Tulum

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities in Tulum have temporarily sealed a booth at the north entrance of Jaguar Park after citizens and protesters reported alleged irregularities, including unauthorized charges to visitors.

The measure was carried out Friday by personnel from the Tulum City Council’s Fiscalization Department following a request from a group of residents who claimed the booth was collecting fees for park entry without visible permits or clear information about the legality of the operation.

During the protest, participants expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the booth’s management, which had previously served as an information kiosk. According to their statements, the space continued operating under conditions that raised doubts among visitors and locals, who demanded an official review.

In response, Sergio Canto Contreras, director of the Fiscalization Department, arrived at the scene and spoke with those in charge of the facility, requesting documentation to prove its authorization. When the required documents were not presented and the booth’s administrative status remained unclear, officials decided to proceed with a preventive closure.

Canto explained that the closure is temporary and part of an administrative process. Those responsible have a legally established period to appear before the relevant authorities and present the necessary documentation to demonstrate that the booth’s operation complies with the law.

He warned that if the requirement is not met or the situation is not regularized, the closure could become permanent. Officials are also considering ordering the removal of the structure from the site.

The intervention drew attention from tourists, service providers, and residents passing through the area, as access to Jaguar Park and Tulum’s beaches has been a topic of debate in recent months.

As investigations and the administrative process continue, the case has reignited discussions about access mechanisms, fees, and the need to ensure legal certainty in public spaces.
