Three Bar Attacks in Less Than a Week Leave One Dead, One Wounded in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A wave of armed attacks on three bars in less than a week has killed one person, left another seriously wounded, and reignited concerns about security in this tourist destination, with no arrests reported so far.

The first attack occurred at Bar El Congo near the Arco Vial area, where the manager was shot and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Days later, gunmen on a motorcycle fired at the facade of Bar El Pretexto on Avenida 115 with Avenida Solidaridad. Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office collected about 10 spent shell casings at the scene, but no injuries were reported.

The deadliest incident took place at Bar La Santa in the Bellavista neighborhood, where a gunman shot a man at close range. The victim was rushed to a hospital but died from his wounds.

After each attack, municipal police, state security forces, and federal agents cordoned off the areas and began collecting evidence. However, the lack of arrests has drawn sharp criticism from residents, business owners, and civic groups, who are demanding a more effective security strategy.

On social media, users questioned the effectiveness of the 500 patrol cars that municipal authorities had promised, noting that police presence remains insufficient during high-impact incidents.

Nightlife industry leaders expressed concern that the violence could damage the perception of safety in one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, hurting both the local economy and the confidence of visitors and residents.

As investigations continue, no suspects have been officially named, and the pressure on authorities to deliver results is mounting.
